I’ve always loved baking. Creating something sweet and comforting from flour, sugar, and eggs has always provided a sense of accomplishment for me. When you make something delicious for family and friends, it’s a moment of pride, community, and love.
After extensively prototyping, I developed our solution, a do-it-yourself kit that includes all the ingredients, tools, and party favors needed to make a birthday cake in any kitchen to celebrate a child’s birthday in any home. It’s an opportunity to bake together, celebrating one of their own in their own place at their own time. It’s a chance to gather friends and family to make memories. I think it’s a perfect way to tell a young child they are special.
At Bake a Wish, we want every child, no matter their background, to feel deserving, seen, and celebrated.
Bake a Wish was born years ago on Stansfield Street in Blackburn, a poor mill town in Northern England. My father grew up in poverty, making necessities difficult to obtain and luxuries impossible to afford. In fact, growing up, he never had a birthday party or even a birthday cake. Because of his upbringing, my father has always stressed the importance of a birthday, and with every one of mine, he’d repeat his story, coloring in more of the brutal details the older I got. As a result, when I became aware of the true scale of the poverty plaguing our American homes, I decided to take a stand and start Bake a Wish.
